A clear and concise CV is a vital step in your optical job search. We wanted to share our top CV writing tips to help you with securing your ideal role in the Optometry sector.
A typical CV has the following sections: Professional Profile, Work Experience, Education & Qualifications, Hobbies & Interests and Additional Skills/Other Qualifications. See below for tips on how to write each section.
Key Facts To Include
We have seen quite often location details left out of CV’s. Include:
- Name
- Address
- If you are willing to relocate (if the job vacancy is non commutable)
- Contact details – phone and email
- Education – when adding in your education details include years, levels, subjects and grades
Professional Profile – Highlight Your Key Skills
This is your opportunity to write a couple of paragraphs about you as an individual, around 200 words is an ideal length.
This includes the skills you have gained and your strengths. As an example maybe add in any achievements you have gained whilst in employment, any awards you have won, league table results, leadership skills.
Work Experience
List your career history with the most recent first including your job title, start and finish dates.
Be succinct and use bullet points and aim to keep your CV within three pages.
Prospective practice employers are looking for key facts on a CV that are relevant.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
In this section you can include:
- Any additional courses/professional qualifications (always include the year you obtained them),
- Software systems you have used.
- If you have a driving license
- Any additional language skills.
Hobbies & Interests
This includes anything you may do outside work including:
- hobbies
- clubs
- school/university activities
- voluntary work
Try to keep it to a maximum of 3 or 4 activities that you have gained relevant skills from.
Attention to detail
Proofread, and then proofread again!
It may seem obvious but check for grammatical errors and spelling mistakes.
